year of Emperor Chien Lung of the Ching Dynasty. It takes a total area of 1,600 pings. Taking all the architectural essence of Kaiyuan Temple in Chuanchou China, Lungshan Temple sits atop the list of the Eight Lugang scenic attractions. It is so spectacular and magnificent that it is dubbed the Forbidden City of Taiwan. The architectural design depicts the Chinese palaces in the Northern Sung Dynasty, in the four three-court layout, with independent arched gateway—the only temple in Taiwan, with a total of twelve square columns. The two dragon columns in the center have the dragon head facing up in one and facing down the other—a unique design in Taiwan. You are greeted by a large bronze bell at the Temple, weighing ten catties which can be heard for miles, known as the treasure bestowed for entire Lugang Lungshan Temple. Lugang Tienhou Temple
Lugang used to be a natural port in frequent and busy trade with China. To safeguard those traveling over the Taiwan Strait on trade, worshippers proposed to build Lugang Tienhou Temple in 1646 during the Ming Dynasty to worship the Goddess Matsu. Lugang Tienhou Temple represents the “Precious Hall” among the eight Lugang Scenic Attractions and is dubbed the “Miao Tsu Temple” |

which wasbuilt in late Ming Dynasty and was relocated to the present location in early Ching Dynasty, say, 3rd year of Emperor Yung Cheng. The Temple worships the respected founding Goddess Matsu of Meichou. The Goddess Matsu has been spread to more than two thousand branches. The Goddess Matsu Statue comes from Meichou, China. With heavy worshippers for centuries, the Matsu Statue appears black in the wake of heavy joss sticks. It is, therefore, dubbed the “Black Faced Goddess Matsu”. The Temple is itself a work of art, and a meaningful treasure. The newly built 14-storey architecture serves all worshippers from all over Taiwan with comprehensive facilities and diverse functions year round, in particular during the 1st~3rd lunar moons. Goddess Matsu’s birthday falls on the 23rd day of the 3rd lunar moon while Lugang Tienhou Temple sponsors grand celebrations amidst the heavy streams of worshippers.

Wenkai Academy
Wenkai Academy is named in memory of Shen Kuang-wen, alias Shen Wen-kai, a renowned literator of the late Ming Dynasty. He came to Taiwan from China when Taiwan was colonized by the Dutch. He tried hard to teach the local community to read and was dubbed the Ancestor of Han Literature in Taiwan. The Wenkai Academy is the very birthplace of literature and education of Lugang. It consists of |

the Wenkai Academy Civil Shrine Martial Temple worshipping the Wenchang God and Martial Temple worshipping General Kuan Yu, in a three-in-one architectural compound, with Wenkai Academy on the left-hand side, Civil Shrine in the middle and Martial Temple on the right-hand side. It is here the local community learns and practices martial arts. Wenkai Academy is the very cradle of literature and education of Lugang.
