Something you must know about Siansi

The down-to-earth inhabitants of Siansi Township make a living by farming, fishing and husbandry. Leather drums, preserved eggs and the talents of the elderly are well known as the “Three Siansi Treasures”, suggesting the unique local culture. The Changpin Industrial Park, which has been developed in recent years, brings added vision to the local industry.

Inhabitants in Siansi Township primarily make a living by growing rice and garlic but do not reap a bumper harvest because of the unsound geological factors such as heading the salty wind and located at end of irrigation systems. Quite a few of the industrious locals have, therefore, engaged in fishing, husbandry or worked in factories. They once won island-wide fame for ducks during the 1970s. Today, the duck industry is not as prosperous. This area of Siansi is still the home of preserved eggs and salted eggs. By the selecting quality and treating the eggs with a unique process, Siansi preserved eggs and salted eggs are still the favorite in the eyes of consumers throughout Taiwan.

Yung-an Drum Mill
“Yung-an Drum Mill” is now the only and sole drum mill which manufactures drums by hand you can find in entire Changhua County. It is currently operated by Huang Hu and his brother Huang Cheng-feng, the third generation successors. They heavily depend upon weather condition to make leather drums because the leather materials tend to decay during a humid raining day and will shape well during a dry day. The drum makers, therefore, are in mixed sentiment, both in favorand disfavor of changeable weather during summer time. It isworthwhile for you, as a curious visitor,to
