Hemei—a Township You Can’t Afford to Miss
|
| |
Hemei Township used to be known as “Kalishan” in the local aboriginal “Babrza” dialect spoken by the “Pingpu Tribal People”, suggesting a very pleasant place where cold weather meets hot. Before Hemei was developed, it used to be the site of the Babu Ra Tribe and Asock Tribe, translated liberally into “Hemei Line”.
As the “Hemei Village” was founded on October 1, 1920, this place was officially named Hemei. In fact, since the very ancestors, this township has been developed for three hundred years (since 1665). The pains and sweat of ancestors on this land have made possible this Hemei Township as one of the economic hubs of Changhua County. The textiles, umbrellas and foods manufactured here are renowned at home and abroad. |

Hemei Dao Dong School
Hemei Dao Dong School was founded in 1857, 7 year of Xian Feng in Ching Dynasty, as one of schools in its like in a more integral shape in Taiwan. With refurbishing efforts in recent years including replacement of beams and columns, it retained its old shape. It immediately neighbors Hemei Junior High School and Hemei Primary School. In the Main Hall, it worships Literator Chu and Kui Hsing deity. In the east wing, those people having made significant contribution to the construction and refurbishment are worshipped. The Land God is worshipped in the west wing. You will also find the very original logs used in the initial construction. The heavily trees-shaded courtyard is the favorite of the local community people, especially at dawn and dusk.

Hemei Dao Dong School encompasses a total area of 2,500 ping (1 ping = 3.3025 M2 = 36 ft2 ). It is surrounded by the sculptured enclosing walls all around and the awesome main gate. The Temple itself is a two-unit szu-ho-yuan (four-section quadrangle compound.) The lobby is in three-door façade. There is a two-story Literature-Cherishing Pavilion on the right-hand side with very spacious patio. There is one security guard room each on the left and right hand sides. The main hall auditorium is in a three-unit façade, with five-unit depth, conveying a splendid countenance. Worshipped in the middle is Chu Tze. The studio hall has round doors as sun and moon on the left and right hand sides. The inside chamber used to be the residence of the School master. The School conveys an integral layout, is a very friendly architectural design but tranquil ambience, representing very elegant and graceful room for learning. The Literature-Cherishing Pavilion on the west wing is a common scene of studios, suggesting how much they respected literature in time of old.
